We spent the last week mapping every recovery and wellness studio in the greater Chicago area. The result: 588 locations across 9 recovery modalities, from dedicated cold plunge studios in Lincoln Park to infrared sauna lounges in Hinsdale to float tanks in the western suburbs.
This is the largest recovery studio directory for the Chicago metro — and honestly, we're surprised by the numbers. Recovery wellness has gone from a fringe biohacking niche to a massive local industry, and the data backs it up.
The Numbers
Here's how the 588 recovery locations break down by modality:
| Modality | Studios |
|---|---|
| Infrared Sauna | 247 |
| Red Light Therapy | 204 |
| Cryotherapy | 153 |
| IV Therapy | 137 |
| Compression Therapy | 93 |
| Float Therapy | 34 |
| Hyperbaric Oxygen | 26 |
| Cold Plunge | 19 |
| Contrast Therapy | 17 |
A few things stand out immediately.
Infrared Sauna Dominates
Nearly half of all recovery studios in the Chicago area offer infrared sauna — 247 locations. This isn't surprising. Infrared saunas have lower startup costs than cryotherapy chambers or float tanks, and they appeal to a broad audience. Many med spas, wellness lounges, and even some fitness studios have added an infrared sauna as an upsell service.
Red light therapy follows close behind at 204 studios. These two modalities often show up together — a studio with an infrared sauna frequently also offers red light therapy panels.
Cold Plunge Is Still Rare
Despite all the hype from Andrew Huberman, Wim Hof, and every wellness influencer on Instagram, only 19 studios in the entire Chicago metro offer dedicated cold plunge. That's compared to 153 cryotherapy locations.
Why the gap? Cold plunge requires plumbing, filtration, chilling systems, and ongoing water treatment. Cryotherapy chambers are more expensive upfront but operationally simpler — no water to manage. For studio owners, cryo is the easier business model. For consumers who want full-body cold water immersion, options are genuinely limited.

Where the Recovery Studios Are
Chicago proper leads with 84 recovery locations, which isn't surprising for a city of 2.7 million. But the suburbs tell the more interesting story:
- Naperville — 33 studios. The DuPage County hub is recovery-dense, with everything from cryotherapy to float therapy.
- Libertyville and Barrington — 19 each. The Lake County corridor is punching above its weight.
- Glen Ellyn — 18 studios. Another DuPage strong point.
- Hinsdale, Highland Park, Wheaton, Park Ridge — 16-17 each. Affluent suburbs with high wellness demand.
The pattern is clear: recovery studios cluster in wealthy suburbs where residents have disposable income for wellness services. This mirrors what we see in boutique fitness — the densest studio markets are in high-income areas.
The Hidden Recovery Studios
Here's something we didn't expect: 64 fitness studios that we already had in the SweatLocal directory turned out to have recovery amenities hiding in plain sight.
HOTWORX locations have infrared saunas built into their workout model. HealthTrack Sports Wellness in Glen Ellyn has a cold plunge. Bears Fit in Vernon Hills offers compression therapy. Several FFC locations and high-end gyms have saunas and recovery lounges that never show up in a Google search for "cryotherapy near me."
These cross-listed studios now appear in both their fitness category and in the recovery directory. If you're already a member at one of these gyms, you might have recovery amenities you've never tried.
What's Next
We'll be adding studio-specific details — pricing, equipment, hours for recovery services — as we crawl more studio websites. We're also planning deep-dive guides for each modality.
